HATS had the privilege of making Eileen’s final wish come true. Eileen, a woman battling ovarian cancer, had always cherished trips to the beach and longed for one last visit. Sadly, Eileen’s health was deteriorating rapidly.
On Friday, October 4th, we received a call from a gentleman named Dominic, Eileen’s son, who expressed his heartfelt desire to make his mother’s wish come true. Although we do not typically handle such requests, we were moved by Dominic’s plea and decided to do everything in our power to help.
“I explained it is something that we would not normally undertake, but I would try very hard to help,” Vicky said during the phone call with Dominic.
With our CEO’s permission, we coordinated the logistics and ensured that Eileen’s transportation, medical needs, and overall comfort were taken care of. Adam Dawson – one of our ACA’s, with his compassionate nature, volunteered to accompany Eileen and her family on the trip.
Eileen’s condition presented unique challenges. Her cancer had attacked a nerve in her leg, making it impossible for her to sit in a car for the trip. However, Dominic, a registered nurse himself, was able to assist with transfers and administer her medications.
On the day of the trip, Adam went above and beyond to make Eileen’s experience as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Eileen’s family was overwhelmed with gratitude for Vicky and our team’s compassion and support. Dominic, whose birthday it was that day expressed his sincere thanks for making Eileen’s final wish come true.
“From the moment he arrived, Adam made it clear he was there to help Mum have the day she deserved,” Dominic said. “He went out of his way to make sure Mum was comfortable and she was made to feel special, safe and cared for. He even brought along some sweets for her grandchildren.”
The day itself was a perfect blend of sunshine, laughter, and cherished memories. Eileen was able to relax on the beach, enjoy the fresh air, and eat some of the tastiest fish and chips with her family.
Eileen herself expressed her gratitude: “Adam made the journey so easy and pleasant. He was absolutely lovely. I was very happy. The trip was comfortable, and it was lovely to be able to lay down for the journey. The beach was so lovely. I got my chips by the beach, an ice cream and a donut and that was all that I wanted. The sun was very bright, it was lovely.”
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who was involved in making this special day possible. This experience was a reminder of the power of human connection and the importance of making a difference in people’s lives. It is a testament to the compassion and dedication of our team, who went above and beyond to provide exceptional care and support. Your hard work helped to create a truly unforgettable experience for Eileen and her family.
